China ends Japan’s long reign to win women’s basketball Asia Cup title

SYDNEY (AP) — China rallied to claim its first women’s basketball Asia Cup title since 2012 as they beat five-time defending champion Japan 73-71 in an epic final on Sunday.Trailing at halftime it appeared China may fall for a third consecutive time in a title game as reigning champions Japan scored the last 14 points of the first half to lead by nine points. Led by player of the tournament center Xu Han, China seized the momentum early in the third quarter and took what proved a match-winning lead late in the game to end their 12-year wait for a gold medal in front of a large crowd in Sydney. Xu finished with a match-defining 26 points and 10 rebounds to complete the feat of recording a double-double in every game of the tournament. Siyu Wang scored 17 points. Maki Takada led Japan with 17 points and four rebounds, with Saki Hayashi scoring 12 points for Japan.China’s title follows its silver medal at the women’s basketball World Cup, also held in Sydney, late last year. In French town under curfew, wave of violence leaves locals dazed and angry

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 19:36:05 GMT

COLOMBES, France — Late weekend afternoons in July are usually prime time for social meet-ups and busy café tables in the pedestrian streets of Saint-Denis, the heart of local life in Colombes. But this weekend, terraces emptied early on Saturday as handymen hastily nailed up wooden planks on shop windows. After riots raged through the streets of this Paris suburb for three straight nights, Colombes Mayor Patrick Chaimovitch declared a night curfew starting Saturday evening, and scheduled to last until Tuesday morning. Many other municipalities have taken similar measures.Colombes is a diverse town of 80,000 — home to both well-off young professionals and multi-racial, poorer communities. It borders Nanterre, where 17-year-old Nahel was shot dead by the police last Tuesday. Like in many suburban towns in the Paris region and beyond, the wave of violence that followed has left inhabitants stunned.Standing next to Chaimovitch in front of a local retailer on Saturday, Julien Beaussier, ...

Elon Musk imposes daily limits on reading posts on Twitter

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Twitter owner Elon Musk has limited the amount of tweets that most users can view each day — restrictions he described as an attempt to prevent unauthorized scraping of potentially valuable data from the social media platform. The site is now requiring people to log on to view tweets and profiles — a change in its longtime practice to allow everyone to peruse the chatter on what Musk has frequently touted as the world’s digital town square since buying it for $44 billion last year. The restrictions could result in users being locked out of Twitter for the day after scrolling through several hundred tweets. Thousands of users complained Saturday of not being able to access the site.In a Friday tweet, Musk described the new restrictions as a temporary measure that was taken because “we were getting data pillaged so much that it was degrading service for normal users!”Musk has pushed back on what he calls misuse of Twitter data to train popular artificial intelligenc...
